The second session is 5:30-9:30 p.m. this Thursday at MNTC's South Penn Campus located at 13301 S. Penn Ave. The cost is $35 and a current learner's permit or a driver's license is not necessary. The program is taught by Oklahoma Highway Patrol officers.

Subsequent youth sessions will be held:

  • 5:30 - 9:30 p.m., Tuesday Dec.8 at MNTC's Franklin Road Campus, Norman
  • 5:30 - 9:30 p.m., Thursday Dec. 10 at MNTC's South Penn Campus, SOKC

Additionally, there is a free two-hour version for parents available 6-8 p.m. Tuesday Dec. 1 at the South Penn Campus, also lead by Oklahoma Highway Patrol officers.

Last month, the Center of Disease Control reported that motor vehicle crashes are the leading cause of death for U.S. teens. The CDC also reported that young people ages 15-24 represent only 14% of the U.S. population however, they account for 30% ($19 billion) of the total costs of motor vehicle injuries among males and 28% ($7 billion) of the total costs of motor vehicle injuries among females.

"Alive at 25" is a nationwide effort intended to create a collaboration of law enforcement agencies whose mission is to reduce automobile crashes involving young drivers and passengers. This early intervention program is intended to help prevent traffic violations, collisions and fatalities and was developed by the National Safety Council. "Alive at 25" is a young driver awareness program and differs from the traditional driver's education course. Some of the behavioral issues it addresses are dangers of speeding, using cell phones and texting while driving, eating while driving, abusing alcohol or drugs while driving and more.

The four-hour course focuses on behaviors young drivers and passengers typically display behind the wheel. Students learn about the devastating consequences of practicing risky driving behaviors by watching interactive videos, sharing driving experiences, and role-playing various driving situations.

Participants also learn:

  • People in their age group are more likely to be hurt or killed in a vehicle crash.
  • Inexperience, distractions, and peer pressure cause unique driving hazards.
  • Speeding, alcohol, and "party drugs" greatly increase the risk of injury or death as drivers or passengers.
  • Young drivers can greatly reduce their risk by committing to changing their driving behaviors.
  • It makes personal, legal and financial sense to change risky driving behaviors.

Attendees receive a certificate of course completion at the end of the session. Reduction in driver insurance rates for course participants depends on individual insurance providers.
