Moore Norman Technology Center’s Move to Career Clusters

Oklahoma’s economy is fundamentally changing. This new, fast paced economy is technology-driven, knowledge-based, and global. As a result, Moore Norman Technology Center must rethink the design and delivery of career and technology education with the student in mind as a top priority. As part of our commitment to our students, we are implementing the Oklahoma Career Clusters model* to better help prepare today’s students for tomorrow’s emerging job markets.

By implementing the Career Clusters model, we provide more in-depth instruction about the industry, while creating new pathways for career mobility, advancement, and continuing education. The clusters connect academic, technical, and employable skills, and provide courses that are more effectively aligned to industry needs of employees.

The Career Clusters model enhances our ability to help students succeed in the workplace, education, and in life.

What’s in it for the Learner?

The Oklahoma Career Clusters Initiative expands options for students by offering courses that have relevance for those who want to continue their education in college, or further their industry-specific training. Career Clusters are a way to organize instruction nationally in community and technical colleges, career academies, magnet schools, charter schools and high schools that are restructuring around career themes.

Direction | Career Clusters include Plans of Study. It becomes a map so students may visualize their career path and prepares them for the world of work, or for more education or training.

Connection | There is more relevance in CareerTech offerings because Career Majors are offered in smaller units than programs designed in the past. Students may choose from a comprehensive list of Career Majors, which are broad, with courses outlined to help reach specific career and education goals.

Cost savings | Through use of Career Clusters, students can look at the requirements for a career major and focus on the courses in that major. Some students may even start while in high school, and in many cases, students earn college credit for courses, saving them both time and money.
