What do I learn?
Medical assistants perform many administrative and clinical duties such as: taking medical histories, recording vital signs, appointment scheduling, billing and coding, and administering medications. Skill performance can vary according to state law.
Main areas of focus.
- Administrative office procedures including: keyboarding, Microsoft Word, finance, insurance, coding, billing and medical informatics
- Take medical histories and record vital signs
- Prepare patients and assist physician during examinations
- Collect and prepare laboratory specimens or perform basic laboratory tests
- Instruct patients about medication and special diets
- Phlebotomy, prepare patients for x-rays, perform electrocardiograms, remove sutures, change dressings, and sterilize medical instruments

Depending on space available, adults and high school students can start in August.
College Credit
Students may earn up to 42 hours of college credit toward an Associate Degree in Medical Assisting at OCCC.
Licensure/Certification
- Prepare for the National Certified Medical Assistant exam
Accreditation
Accredited by the Curriculum Review Board of the American Association of Medical Assistants Endowment in cooperation with the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Programs.
Your entrance requirements.
High School
- Interview with MNTC Representative
- Complete an interest inventory
- Provide evidence of academic success from one of the following:
- ACT PLAN Test
- End of Instruction Test (EOI)
- COMPASS scores in reading, writing, and math
- ACE Core Grades ACT composite score of 19 or above
- Prove-it Typing Test
- OSBI Immunizations
Adult Students
- Pick up a Medical Assisting Application booklet.
- Meet with a career advisor at either our Franklin Road or South Penn campus. Contact (405) 364-5763, ext. 7260 to make an appointment.
- Complete assessments tests, if needed (COMPASS, IDEAS, Prove-it Keyboarding Assessment, etc.)
- Complete an MNTC application and return it to the Information and Enrollment Center with a one-time $10 non-refundable processing fee.
- Register and attend a required information meeting
- Obtain official high school/GED certificates and college transcripts.
- Submit documentation of required immunizations to Health Education Office
- Submit OSBI Background check to the Health Education Office
Prerequisites
Must have own transportation for clinicals.
Tuition
Tuition rates for adult students are set by Moore Norman Technology Center’s Board of Education and reviewed
annually. Tuition for the 2008-2009 school year is:
In-District | Full-time - $630/semester, Part-time - $315/semester
Out-of-District | Full-time - $945/semester, Part-time - $472.5/semester
There is a one-time application fee of $10 for adult applicants.
There may be additional costs for books, fees or supplies for high school students or adults.
Financial Aid
Financial aid is available for students who qualify. Students applying for financial assistance through grants, sponsorships or scholarships should begin the process well in advance of the start of classes.

Skills & Abilities**
- Follow guidelines to arrange objects or actions in a certain order
- Use math and science skills to solve problems.
- Determine the causes of technical problems and find solutions for them
- Watch gauges, dials, and output to make sure a machine is working properly
- Go back and forth between two or more activities or sources of information without becoming confused
Working Conditions**
- Have a high level of social contact. They work closely with patients, doctors, and other office staff
- Are responsible for the health and safety of patients and other staff
- Often have to deal with patients who are unpleasant or angry due to the effects of their illness
- Are often exposed to disease and infection from their close contact with patients. To protect themselves, they wear masks, glasses, rubber gloves, and other safety attire
- Must be exact in their work. Errors in procedures, treatments, or records could result in serious injury to patients,
staff, or themselves
Possible future careers.
Students who complete this program may enter the workforce as a medical assistant, a medical secretary, a laboratory assistant, a medical records clerk, or may continue their training and education for a degree in applied science, science, biology, pre-medicine, communications, or related degree program.
